| The State Board of Education's adopted Academic Standards for
English/Language Arts and Mathematics were accepted by the Newark Board of
Education at their July 14 Board Meeting. These Standards define what students
are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level. The State
Standards will be amended with expectations for Newark students that will be
more rigorous. Copies of the State Standards by grade level can be found in
the index below.
Assessment is aligned to the Standards and assists teachers in
determining instructional priorities and modifying the curriculum accordingly.
Entry Level Assessments measure a student's prior knowledge so that a
teacher can plan instruction to meet the needs of every student. Progress
Monitoring Assessments measure student progress daily or weekly to
determine if the instruction is supporting learning. And Summative
Assessments, at the end of a unit or course, provide specific and detailed
information about which Standards have, or have not, been achieved.
Assessment data is collected and analyzed by the schools and the
district to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the instructional program.
Newark also participates in the State Testing and Reporting Program. The
Stanford Achievement Test, Ninth Edition, is given to all students in grades
two through eleven, and individual student reports are sent home to parents.
